Road tax: don't pay it if you don't have to. The state will refund your overpayment

Thanks to a recent amendment to the law, many companies are no longer affected by the road tax. Since the change occurred only during the year, many businesses have overpaid the tax. Are you one of them?

Road tax overpayments exceed one billion

During 2022, the Road Tax Act was amended due to economic developments. This amendment significantly narrowed the subject matter of the tax, leading to the de facto abolition of the tax liability for a number of taxpayers. The state also abolished the obligation to pay advance payments of road tax for taxpayers who will no longer be affected.

However, many businesses did not notice this change - as a result, by the beginning of November, the tax administration registered almost CZK 1.5 billion in overpayments for road tax.

Are you paying advances unnecessarily? Get your overpayment back

We recommend that you make sure that the overpayments do not apply to you. You can check this via the tax information box or with your local tax authority.

You can use the overpayment to cover an underpayment of another tax, or you can apply for a refund (use the simple tool on the tax administration's website to do this).

If you leave the overpayment unaddressed, it will be forfeited to the state 6 years after the end of the year in which it was incurred.
